Listen Up Jessie ready

Edmund O’Brien is confident Listen Up Jessie can return in style at Tuesday’s Goulburn meeting.

She jumps from box two in the Mellcat Cleaning Stakes (race 11, 440m) aiming for five consecutive wins.

After placing on debut over the 330m at Richmond last November, Listen Up Jessie clocked her fourth win over the 400m on New Year’s Eve.

She has been sidelined since then, but trialled well at Richmond recently and looks capable of a win.

“I’m fairly confident in her chances,” owner-trainer O’Brien said.

“She’s had a couple of injuries but seems to be right again. She should be up to this class of field and she’s run the 400 (metres) at Richmond.”

Three of Listen Up Jessie’s wins were at Goulburn over 350m but she looks ready to win.

She could face competition from Black Lagoon (box one). O’Brien, could also score a winner in race two with What To Wear (box eight).

Based at Berkshire Park in Sydney’s west, O’Brien was a hobby trainer in Ireland before moving here over 40 years ago, and re-started training about 15 years ago.

“I love the companionship my greyhounds,” the 78-year-old said. “I don’t have much family here so my greyhounds are my loved ones.

“I keep most of mine at home, even the retired ones. I love the thrill of watching a race and my greyhound doing well.”

Varuna (box two) was an impressive winner at Goulburn last week and looks best bet in heat three of the 5th grade Palmerbet Goulburn-Richmond Series (race seven, 350m). Neil Staines’ newcomer clocked 19.84 winning over the 350m.

Turbo Blaze (race five, box two), Gazza Tron (box eight, race six) and Kenny’s Shadow (box eight, race eight) look the top pick in the other heats.

Sandave Cruise (box eight) was an eye-catching winner last week and seems the top pick in, the 5th grade Palmerbet 1-3 Wins Final (race four, 440m). Sandave Cruise was unplaced in two wide draw starts, but clocked a 24.86 win, last week from box one.

Action on the 11-race program starts at 12.04pm
